I’m free!

Oh, I’m free indeed!

When you think of the word FREE, what comes to your mind? For me, free is peace, relaxing, stress free, happiness and freedom. The kind where I just want to run through the field of wildflowers in a dress and just embrace the beauty and the feeling having no burdens in the world. The feeling of no concerns or worrying about the responsibilities of tomorrow.

Now if you say you were thinking of free like “Nothing but Bundt” mini cake freebies for your birthday (if you sign up with them you get a free mini cake on your birthday), nothing wrong with that. When you eat your favorite birthday cake, didn’t you for a short period of time savor not only the sweet taste but also the sight and smell of the tempting treat? For that brief moment in time nothing else seems to matter but that sweet cream cheese icing melting in your mouth. For me, even though it’s a short time, I feel free! I know it sounds crazy, but for person like me that has a weakness (and let’s say appreciation) for desserts , I’m sure you can relate.

To get to the point, in John 8:31, Jesus was talking to the Jews and he said “if ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples; indeed, and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”.

To me the first part where he said “if ye continue in my word, then ye are my disciples indeed”.

He’s saying if you read your bible, study his words, put God’s word in our hearts. You will grow with him. When you grow with him, he consider you his disciples. This is important to keep in our thoughts, especially when we tell ourselves we are too busy to read our bible or take time to pray.

Now to the next part of the verse, “and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”

In this text the Jews were confused and said ye shall be made free? They didn’t understand what Jesus was saying. Then Jesus went on to say that “whosoever committed sin is the servant of sin”

So, each time we commit sin, there’s a cost and a payment that had to be paid. The act of sin can feel like heavy weights on our shoulders. Every sin is different, and the consequence is different but there is forgiveness with our Savior. One way or another the result of sin is the same. It’s a burden, shame, guilt, stress and more. The list can truly go on and on! By now I’m sure you get the point and can relate to times when you have felt this very thing.  So, if we read our bible, study his word, pray, seek his will, then we will grow with him and becomes his disciples. This means we can ultimately be set free! Oh, free indeed! His words will set us free. As is normally the case with our Lord, Jesus wasn’t only talking about just this. Here’s the best part (at least for me).

In one of the most famous verses in the bible, John 3:16- For God so loved the world, that he gave his only son, that whosoever believeth in HIM, should not perish, but have everlasting life.

This clearly shows He died on the cross for all our sins , so that when we believe him and accept him , we would be free! Free indeed!

There’s an old hymn I learned as a little girl called “Power in blood”? It seems to tie into this devotion well. I’m going quote a couple parts. You should check it out if you’ve never heard of this song before.

“Would you be free from the burden of sin?

There’s power in the blood, power in the blood:

Would you over evil a victory win?

Theres wonderful power in the blood…..”

I’m free indeed!
